What is the current status of this project?
On November 12, 2013, Phoenix City Council approved the $27 million project to renovate the international facilities in Terminal 4.

Why now for this project?
The Airport served 2.2 million international passengers in 2012. With new international service and the forecasted growth rate of the existing international carriers, international travel at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is expected to increase to 4.4 million annual international passengers by 2030. This project will make improvements to accommodate and maintain an acceptable level of service for PHX international passengers, especially during heavy international arrival periods.

What improvements will be made?
Approximately 600 passengers per hour can be processed currently. With improvements, 800+ passengers per hour will be able to be accommodated, thus enhancing the level of service we provide.
Planned enhancements include:

  • Added stairs
  • Two faster elevators
  • Relocation of escalators for an expanded queuing area
  • Enlargement of baggage carousels
  • New queuing area for Secondary Screening

What improvements will be made?
The proposed schedule is:

  • January 2014 Begin procurement
  • July 2014 Begin design
  • December 2014 Construction begins
  • June 2016 estimated completion

How much will this project cost?
The estimated cost for this project is $27 million. The project will be financed through airport revenues such as parking, concessions and tenant fees. No local tax dollars will be used.
