Improvements to State Route 143 Will Benefit Airport Visitors
Improvements are being made to State Route 143 (SR 143) which will make it easier for drivers to enter and exit Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on the east side. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) began the project in January 2011. To see renderings of the project, click here.
When the project is finished in the summer of 2012, drivers will be able to take Southbound SR 143 directly into the east side of the Airport. Drivers will also be able to exit from the east side of Sky Harbor directly onto Southbound SR 143 instead of driving south on 44th Street, turning east on University and connecting with the SR 143 on-ramps.
Traffic flow improvements will include:
- Eastbound to Southbound ramp connecting Eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard to Southbound SR 143
- Southbound to Westbound ramp connecting Southbound SR 143 to Westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard
- Westbound to Southbound flyover ramp connecting SR 202 via Westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard to Southbound SR 143
Other changes include the elimination of the current Westbound to Southbound ramp connecting SR 202 via Westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard to SR 143. Southbound SR 143 will also be widened by one auxiliary lane between Washington Street and University Drive to support the new directional ramps.
Phoenix Sky Harbor has already made a change to accommodate this project, closing its East Economy Overflow parking area. Click here to read more about that closure which occurred in early January 2011.
Additionally, throughout the duration of this project, there may be detours or closures put into place that will impact travel to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
