PHX Sky Train™ Takes First Official Ride over Taxiway
The PHX Sky Train™ became the first transit system in the world to cross an active taxiway on Friday, June 29. This is yet another major milestone for the PHX Sky Train™ project as it took its first official ride on the bridge over Phoenix Sky Harbor’s taxiway “R” while aircraft passed underneath the span. The taxiway bridge is the first mass transit bridge in the world to be constructed over an active airport taxiway. It is more than 100 feet tall and large enough for a Boeing 747 to pass below.
Construction on Stage One of the PHX Sky Train™ project is nearly complete. The automated, electrically-powered train, will transport travelers between the METRO light rail at 44th Street and Washington, East Economy Parking and Terminal 4 beginning in the spring of 2013. In the next stage, open by early 2015, travelers will be able to take the PHX Sky Train™ to all of Sky Harbor’s terminals. The PHX Sky Train™ will serve the Rental Car Center in the future. The train will run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It will arrive at stations every three minutes during peak periods and deliver passengers to their destination within five minutes of boarding. It will be free of charge.
