Hope Takes Flight in Annual Jet Pull
Cooler temperatures in Phoenix meant a beautiful, sunny day for the annual US Airways/city of Phoenix Aviation Department Jet Pull at the US Airways Hangar. Now in its eighth year, teams comprised of US Airways employees pulled first followed by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and city of Phoenix teams to raise money for local charity.
Some teams donned costumes or special shirts they had made for the event. But all team members had a sense of excitement as they pulled a US Airways’ 100,000-pound Airbus 319 painted in the Arizona Cardinals livery and tried to be the fastest team to do so.
Music boomed such tunes as “Eye of the Tiger” and the theme song from “Star Wars” as teams marched onto the tarmac to tug on the 100 foot rope and compete for top honors in the Hope Takes Flight Jet Pull. It is harder than it looks to pull an airplane, but all teams did a respectable job. In the end, US Airways CEO Doug Parker presented the US Airways teams with trophies. Team Rampage took home the honors for the second year in a row with a pulling time of 5.325 seconds. From the city of Phoenix, the Achen-Gardner team took home top honors with a time of 6.051. This is the second year in a row that Team Achen-Gardner has taken top honors.
The pulling of the airplane is an annual event that brings employees together to not only do something fun and out of the ordinary, but to raise money for important causes in the community.
“This event is a lot of fun and something that the department looks forward to every year,” said Assistant Aviation Director Tamie Fisher. “The event raises thousands of dollars each year, and city of Phoenix employees have a long tradition of giving back to the community.”
At the end of the day, the city of Phoenix Aviation Department raised more than $7,000 for the Community Service Fund Drive and its programs to keep the community strong. This exceeded the amount raised last year. Money is raised in a variety of ways. Team members pay an entry fee to compete the event and HMS Host donates hot dogs, chips and drinks to sell at the event with all proceeds going to the United Way.
