Amelia Flies into Earth Day 2009

Wednesday, April 22, was Earth Day and to mark the occasion Keep Phoenix Beautiful hosted Earth Day 2009 at the Cesar Chavez Plaza in Downtown Phoenix. The event featured local businesses highlighting their “green” efforts and PHX mascot, Amelia, also made an appearance.

Over 50 exhibitors were on-site to show off their ways of being green, including the benefits of solar energy, rideshare programs, ways to go paperless, water conservation services, promotional products made from recycled goods, ways to recycle wine bottles into glasses and other products, and much more. The first annual Keep Phoenix Beautiful Awards were also presented to a variety of groups for their efforts, and event organizers deemed the entire event a success.

“There were approximately 4,000 attendees,” said Tina Keith of Keep Phoenix Beautiful “The plaza was full even before we opened and stayed packed until close. We didn’t know what to expect and had more interest than we could have dreamed of. We are grateful for all the involvement from the city, all our sponsors, our exhibitors, and of course the wonderful attendees. Plans are already underway for next year!”

And, PHX Sky Harbor mascot, Amelia, was on-site posing for pictures and greeting attendees. The photo on the right features Andrea and Jacob DeAnda meeting Amelia.

PHX Sky Harbor has “green” initiatives of its own. Find out more about our recycling efforts, the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in many of our vehicles, and much more on our website.
