PHX Sky Harbor Leads Top Ten U.S. Airports in Passenger Growth

(Phoenix, AZ) – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport achieved the greatest percentage increase among the nation’s ten busiest airports in 2011 according to an annual traffic report released this week by Airports Council International. Up 5.2% over 2010, Sky Harbor continued to show remarkable growth, serving 40.6 million passengers, which ranked Sky Harbor ninth in the country for passenger activity in 2011. Atlanta remained in the top spot with over 92 million passengers last year.

The findings were revealed yesterday at the Phoenix International Aviation Symposium. The annual Symposium brings together airline industry executives from around the world to Phoenix to discuss pressing aviation issues. Some of this year's attendees included Willie Walsh, CEO, International Airlines Group (the parent company of British Airways and Iberia), Doug Parker, Chairman and CEO of US Airways Group and Krishna Urs, United States Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Affairs.

"This news is a prime example of how Phoenix continues to rise out of the recession and move forward in the global economy," Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said. "More people nationally and internationally are doing their business in Phoenix, touring our city and visiting our local businesses in the process. These numbers are excellent reminders that we must focus on providing world-class services like the PHX Sky Train™ and the new food and beverage concepts in Terminal 4 for our new and returning customers in our airport."

From 2010 to 2011, Sky Harbor saw 16 months of continual growth due to business travel coming back as well as large events in the Valley such as college bowl games, the Waste Management Open, Rock n’ Roll Marathon and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

The City of Phoenix Aviation Department pumps $33 billion into the economy each year and provides over 30,000 jobs, all without spending one cent of local taxpayer dollars on expenses.

"Our 2011 passenger numbers indicate that we need to continue our planning efforts to meet the demand as the economy bounces back. As one of the top ten airports in the country, our facilities must be ready to serve our passengers well," said Aviation Director Danny Murphy.
