Highlight Reels: Volunteers Come Out in Full Force for the Big Game
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport served as the gateway to a record numbers of passengers coming to the Valley for the Super Bowl LVII and the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
The help of volunteers to accommodate increased travel was crucial to ensuring our customers received the service expected from America's Friendliest Airport®. In addition to the Airport’s nearly 300 Navigators volunteers that greet and assist passengers regularly, the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee brought in hundreds of volunteers that took a class on all thing airport and spent time across the airport.
The airport also had some dog-gone popular volunteers as the Navigator Buddies and their handlers greeted passengers feeling the stress of the crowds, ensuring they had a minute to stop and scratch behind the ear and a rub on the belly to calm those nerves.
They were not the only four legged friends on hand to help with the influx of passengers. More than 25 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) explosive detection canines and their TSA handlers were in Phoenix to assist in security operations at key venues at PHX and throughout the Valley of the Sun. These working canines are specially trained to detect explosives and explosive components. Some of the teams work regularly at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport while others have come from airports from across the country.
