Airport Employees Getting Ready for Summer Heat

Last summer was the hottest on record for Phoenix and employees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport get plenty of tips on navigating heat-filled summers with guidance on being aware of heat-related illness and different preventative measures.

The National Service has the following tips for people who are working outside in the heat:

  • Slow down: Reduce, eliminate, or reschedule strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day.
  • Dress for summer: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to reflect heat.
  • Drink plenty of water: Drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid soft drinks and caffeinated fluids.
  • Minimize direct sun exposure: Sunburn reduces your body’s ability to dissipate heat. Wear a hat, use sunscreen and utilize shade.

As another way to help prepare workers for the severity of Phoenix summers, Phoenix Sky Harbor is holding a Heat Safety Fair on Wednesday, April 17 for all employees at the 44th St. PHX Sky Train® Station.

Airport staff will show members of the media and public how Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Safety and Emergency Preparedness Team will handle the summer temperatures and ensure airport employees and visitors are safe this summer.

Dr. David Hondula, Director of the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation for the City of Phoenix, and meteorologists with the National Weather Service, will speak during the Heat Safety Fair. Representatives of the Phoenix Fire Department, Phoenix Police Department, and City of Aviation Safety and Emergency Preparedness will also present displays about heat safety.
