Museums, Festivals, and More Await Travelers to Wichita
A 44-foot-tall steel sculpture stands in downtown Wichita where the two rivers – Big and Little Arkansas join. The sculpture is called the Keeper of the Plains and it is a Wichita icon. It signifies the importance of the Indigenous people in the region and honors Wichita’s heritage. And 2024 is the 50-year anniversary of the sculpture created by Native American Artist Blackbear Bosin. The sculpture is a true treat for visitors to see, but things to see and do in Wichita don’t stop there. In fact, the area offers a wealth of activities for visitors.
Museum fans will be delighted by the diversity of options in the area. From the Old Cowtown Museum which showcases the 19th century American West to the Mid-America All-Indian Museum which highlights the heritage of the American Indian to Exploration Place, which is all things science, there is much to experience. Art lovers will also enjoy the Art Museum featuring works by Winslow Homer and Mary Cassatt. Baseball lovers should check out the new Wichita Baseball Museum. It’s free and showcases the area’s baseball history.
Aviation enthusiasts also won’t want to miss the Kansas Aviation Museum. There, visitors can explore the state’s aviation history with exhibitions devoted to aviation pioneers and aircraft.
