Year-end Air Service Wrap-up

 

What a year it has been for new routes.

February 2024

American Airlines launched two new destinations from Phoenix Sky Harbor, nonstop service from Phoenix to Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) in Tijuana, Mexico and Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco, Washington. These are not only new destinations for Phoenix, but for American Airlines as well. This made Phoenix Sky Harbor the only international airport at the time with service between Tijuana and the United States. From TIJ, passengers can then access more than 40 airports throughout Mexico.

Other highlights:

  • On Feb. 16, Flair Airlines began service from Phoenix to Edmonton, Canada four times a week. This was a new route for the airline.
  • Air Canada resumed Montreal nonstop service on Feb. 24.

March 2024

Flair Airlines began service to Vancouver.

April 2024

Southwest Airlines began new daily non-stop service between Phoenix and Washington D.C. Dulles Airport.

Frontier Airlines started daily service to Los Angeles and four times a week service to St. Louis beginning on April 10.

May 2024

Air France began new nonstop service on May 23 between PHX and Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris, France. This was the first nonstop service between Phoenix and France.

Other highlights:

  • Frontier Airlines started flying from Phoenix to Los Cabos International Airport on May 16, with service on Thursdays and Sundays. This marked the first international destination for Frontier Airlines from Phoenix.

August 2024

Frontier Airlines started daily non-stop service from San Jose Mineta International Airport to Phoenix on Aug. 13.

October 2024

On Oct. 1, Contour Airlines took over the Phoenix-Show Low route previously operated by Southern Airlines.

Phoenix Sky Harbor welcomed Porter Airlines, which started daily service to Toronto on Oct. 3 and operates out of Terminal 3 in the North Concourse. 

Southwest Airlines returned nonstop service to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) in Birmingham, Alabama four times a week, which began on Oct. 3. The airline previously served this route in 2012 and is the only airline in the market to fly this route nonstop.

Breeze Airways started new service to Norfolk, VA from Phoenix, on Oct. 3 with twice weekly service on Thursdays and Sundays.

American Airlines began daily service from Phoenix Sky Harbor to Provo Airport in Utah on Oct. 7, using a CRJ-700 aircraft.

Southwest Airlines started seasonal daily nonstop service to Wichita, Kansas.

jetBlue introduced the Mint experience to all Phoenix flights. Mint is jetBlue’s award-winning premium-class experience that offers fully lie-flat seats and additional amenities. This was the first time jetBlue had brought the Mint experience to customers in Phoenix.  

November 2024

American Airlines expanded service from Phoenix to Mexico on Nov. 5. The airline has two daily flights to Cancun and increased their flights to Puerto Vallarta with three daily flights. American Airlines operates flights to 12 destinations in Mexico from Phoenix.

Additionally, American Airlines added an extra seasonal daily flight to Mexico City starting on Nov. 6, which will operate through March 29.

Frontier Airlines started flying four times a week between Phoenix Sky Harbor and Hollywood Burbank Airport on Nov. 21.

Southwest Airlines added service from Phoenix to Des Moines, Iowa on Nov. 23 and operates on peak travel days around the holidays. Southwest previously operated the route as recently as January 2022.

Coming up in 2025

Allegiant begins nonstop service between Phoenix and Pittsburgh Feb. 7.

American Airlines will add service to McClellan-Palomar Airport (CLD) in Carlsbad, California, beginning Feb. 13, 2025. American's regional affiliate Envoy Air will operate twice-daily flights to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, marketed as American Eagle service.

Southwest Airlines starts redeye service for the first time in five markets. Phoenix is one of those markets with service to Baltimore/Washington starting Feb. 13.

American Airlines announced they will be serving Appleton, Wisconsin starting Feb. 15. This route, which will be operated by American Eagle affiliate Envoy Air on board an Embraer E175 regional jet, will run on Saturdays.

Frontier Airlines will start twice weekly service between Phoenix and Austin-Bergstrom on March 7.

Starting March 30, 2025, Aeromexico will connect Phoenix and Mexico City International Airport with daily service. Aeromexico will fly Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Aeromexico previously served Phoenix Sky Harbor, but discontinued service in 2014.
