Activities, Culture and Nature Await You in Calgary

As temperatures rise here in Phoenix, perhaps you’re looking for a cooler getaway. Why not look to our neighbor to the north, Canada? Air Canada and WestJet offer nonstop flights to Calgary making it easy to get there in just over three hours.

What does Calgary have to offer for visitors? Plenty. Here are some highlights:

If music is your jam, check out Studio Bell. It features the National Music Centre, which offers numerous exhibitions and artifacts devoted to sharing the music of Canada.

Looking forward to the 2024 Olympics? Did you know Calgary hosted the Winter Olympics in 1988? Be sure to check out WinSport Olympic Sport where you can get into the Olympic spirit. Even though this was the site of the Winter Games, there are plenty of year-round activities for visitors including mountain biking, skating and more. Also be sure to stop by Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary. It offers an Olympic Flame bronze statue, reflecting pool and amphitheater. Events are held throughout the year here.

Grab a bit of nature in the middle of town. Prince’s Island Park features more than 20 acres of trails and open spaces. It’s free to visit, and visitors can enjoy a stroll along the pedestrian walkways along the Bow River.

If you like being outdoors and enjoy birds, Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is the place to be. More than 270 species of birds as well as numerous mammals visit the area. It’s also free to visit.

Want to see even more animals? Check out the Calgary Zoo. The zoo features more than 4,000 animals and offers something for children and adults alike.

Many visitors also enjoy visiting the Calgary Tower. It offers a 360-degree observation deck where onlooks can enjoy views of the city, Canadian Rockies, and more.

Heading to Calgary in July? Check out Calgary’s most famous annual event – the Calgary Stampede. It’s often called the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” The event showcases rodeo events, live music and more. And, if you’re interested in the Stampede but not there in July, check out Sam Center at Stampede Park. It has a variety of interactive exhibits and hands on experiences that will make you feel part of the Stampede experience.

If you have more time, jump in your rental car and head to the Canadian Rockies. Banff, Canmore, and Lake Louise offer the most breathtaking landscapes for you to enjoy. From beautiful mountain walks through Johnston Canyon or gazing at the turquoise blue waters of Peyto Lake or Lake Louise, there is so much beauty and pristine nature to be found. Banff also offers a variety of shopping and dining experiences as well as in-town activities like visiting the Banff Hot Springs. Canmore offers a more laid-back experience with many great restaurants, some shops and easy access to a number of beautiful hikes as well.
