Phoenix Airport Museum Unveils New Art
In a new and colorful Phoenix Airport Museum exhibition, artist Teresa Villegas reimagines the cherished Mexican card game, Lotería, through expressive and detailed paintings. Spanish for “lottery,” Lotería is one of the most popular and culturally significant games in Mexico. It is often referred to as “Mexican bingo” due to its similar format.
Villegas’ series, La Lotería, transforms each card from the game’s 54 card deck into 54 vibrant paintings inspired by cultural stories, food, and everyday items. By infusing traditional Lotería iconography with her own personal narrative, Villegas adds a fresh perspective to the game and invites travelers to explore cultural imagery.
