Phoenix Sky Harbor Honors One of Its Own with Aviation Management Scholarship

A longtime leader in aviation and onetime assistant aviation director of PHX is being remembered with a scholarship in his name for Arizona State University students who are studying in the aviation field.

The Carl Newman Memorial Aviation Management Scholarship sponsored by Phoenix Sky Harbor remembers the industry leader who gave decades of service to the City of Phoenix Aviation Department.

He joined the Aviation Department in 1980 as an operations administrative assistant, eventually rising to the role of assistant aviation director.

Two ASU students, Gianni Santolamazza, an air transportation management major, and Marcus Pelayo, who is studying aeronautical management, were awarded the scholarship last semester.

“I have been interested in aviation for my whole life, with the goal of becoming an airline pilot at the center of my keen interest in the industry,” said Santolamazza in thanking the scholarship committee. “I look forward to continuing pushing towards my goals as I progress with my college education.”

“I’m attending ASU as I want to further my aviation knowledge and complete flight training to fly commercially,” Pelayo said. “What excites me are the opportunities that this training will open up for me.”

Donors can give to the scholarship program by visiting the Carl Newman Memorial Aviation Management Scholarship webage.
