Celebrate Phoenix History Month at Phoenix Sky Harbor and Beyond
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego has proclaimed March “Phoenix History Month” to urge all Phoenicians to remember the foresight of our city's earliest settlers. One of the first acts of the newly appointed Mayor's Office Official Historian in 2022 was to partner with Mayor Gallego on the development of the proclamation.
Steve Schumacher, the Official Historian for the Office of Mayor Kate Gallego, says, “In 1867, a group of Euro-American settlers organized an irrigation company and began construction of a modern-era canal along the route of a Huhugam canal, southeast of present-day downtown Phoenix. By March of 1868, the canal was completed, opening several thousand acres of land to agricultural cultivation. This engineering accomplishment facilitated the establishment of the agricultural community of Phoenix and marked the beginning of the development and expansion that continues in our esteemed city to this day.”
