Phoenix Sky Harbor Awarded Grant for Solar Parking

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport secured a $20 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to expand the Airport’s sustainability initiatives. The funding will be utilized to design and construct solar covered parking at the Terminal 4 garage on the top floor, 44th Street PHX Sky Train Station® and 24th PHX Street Sky Train Station® parking lots.

The proposed design for the three structures includes nearly 20,000 solar panels measuring about 13 acres total and will produce 18.8 gWh of energy annually. The panels will increase renewable electricity, produce solar renewable energy credits (SRECs) for the city, and will be compatible with electric vehicle charging capabilities. The battery storage will strengthen the electrical grid and emergency preparedness.

Construction of Phase I is anticipated to begin in fall 2024.

The funding is part of the 2022-2024 Airport Improvement Program (AIP) Supplemental Grant Program, and the FAA is investing nearly $92 million to help airports achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
