The Latest on Taxiway U

Construction is underway on the Taxiway Uniform project! The first stages of construction include work to prepare roads and access in advance of building the new 2,000-foot taxiway at Phoenix Sky Harbor.

This new taxiway will bridge the north and south airfields on the west end of the airport, allowing for more efficient aircraft flow and streamlined airfield operations. Currently, the only taxiways at PHX are on the east end of the airfield.

Work will consist of multiple phases; this first phase is known as project enabling construction, which includes making substantial roadway modifications. Sky Harbor Boulevard and Buckeye Road will be realigned as part of this construction. Other phases include:

  • Major utility relocation
  • West airport roadway reconfiguration
  • Modifications to existing airport facilities.

The project is expected to be completed in 2027. The current overall project budget is $332.9 million, which includes all project costs. The construction budget is $279.5 million, with approximately $200 million coming from money provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed by Congress in 2021 and approved by the Phoenix City Council in April 2022. The balance will be paid from Passenger Facility Charges and airport revenues.
