Planning a trip to Europe, but not sure where to go? Have you thought about Munich? There’s more to Munich than just the famous Oktoberfest. And, with nonstop flights to Europe, Munich is an easy one-stop connection from Frankfurt, London or Paris.
Here are some of the top things to do in Munich:
No trip to Munich would be complete without walking around Marienplatz, Munich’s central square. There, you’ll find stunning architecture including the New Town Hall and the well-known Glockenspiel clock which puts on a show twice a day.
If the weather is nice, you’ll enjoy strolling through the Englischer Garden. This is Munich’s largest park. In summer months, relax and listen to music on the grassy lawn or visit the Chinese Tower beer garden. Make sure you make time to see the surfers riding waves on the Eisbach stream. Some of them are pretty talented!
Munich has a rich history and offers a number of palaces and museum. The Nymphenburg Palace is one of the largest in Europe. It features ornate rooms and beautiful gardens. The Residenz Museum is also a former palace and features many treasures and artistic wonders from the past. If art is more your speed, check out the Alte Pinakothek (Old Masters), Neue Pinakothek (19th-century art), and Pinakothek der Moderne (modern art). Don’t miss the gothic Frauenkirche (cathedral) right near Marienplatz. It is stunning.
Car enthusiasts won’t want to miss a trip to the BMW Museum and BMW Welt. Both offer a chance to learn about BMW’s history, see new models, take tours and more.
And it wouldn’t be a visit to Munich without a visit to a beer hall. While the Hofbräuhaus is the most well-known, visitors can also explore Paulaner Bräuhaus, Augustiner-Keller and more.
Munich also makes an easy base for other exploration around Bavaria including visiting the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle.
