Summer Ready Message for PHX Shared with Media
With the start of the Monsoon in June, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport staff shared with media and its viewers the steps the Airport takes to mitigate the summer storm season. Staff shared about the preparation that is done year-round and the real-time response that happens at the airport with incoming storms during the monsoon season so passengers’ impacts are minimized.
Additionally, with the record setting consecutive days of excessive heat, Airport staff shared with media from around the nation that Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is well prepared for Arizona summers and our runways can accommodate planes taking off and landing in hot weather.
Many remember in 1990, when Phoenix set an all-time record of 122 degrees, so some airlines stopped taking off and landing for part of that day. This was due to the airlines not having airliner performance charts for a temperature that high. Since then, the majority of the airlines that serve Phoenix Sky Harbor have updated their airliner performance charts with new data that goes up to and above the 122-degree range and have arranged with airline manufacturers to get additional information as needed.
